　I am wondering why he is speaking English.

というような会話を聞いたことがあるだろうか？

　よく使うが、学校では使い方を教えてくれない表現の一つです。

意味は

　彼は、なぜ英語を話しているのかしら？

　

どう見ても日本人にしか見えない人たちが、英語で会話をしているシーンでの会話です。

よく、空港や、公共の場で、不思議に思うことがあるはずだ。そんな時に、Why are they speaking English?と聞くよりも、

穏やかな質問で、自然に入りやすい。質問の導入例文として、Well, why are they speaking English？They look like Japanese. などという表現もあるが、この場合だと、突然すぎるし、そもそも、かなり親しい仲同士なら良いが、たまたま、空港のカウンターで並んだ時に知り合った、人との会話としては相応しくない。そこれで、I am Wondering why they are speaking English. They seem to be Japanese or some other kinds of Asian countries. という表現の方がやんわりした質問の仕方だ。

自己主張から始めて、質問に移る。これを一言で表す便利な表現。

　そもそも、欧米人は、自己主張が日本人よりも強いというのは、このような表現の違いからきている。

　突然、学校でならった文法に従って、質問するのではなく、まず自分の意見を述べる。つまり、

I am wondering why they are speaking English.

直訳すれば、「私は、彼らがなぜ英語を話しているのか？不思議に感じている」ということだ。

　これは、すなわち、自分の意見を話しているとともに、相手の意見を伺っているということでもある。

　だから、「自分の意見を述べた上で、質問する」というスタンスをわずか１文で達成する便利な表現だ。

　これから、

Why are they speaking English?

Why do you think they are speaking English ?

　などと質問するのではなく、I am wondering why を使おう。

　以下に例文をあげるので、一緒に練習しよう。
